Big Apple Donuts, The Curve

Before I start on the post, this is to highlight my OTHER photo blog where I post random photos (some not posted and some posted here before). Lee Ping (my fan, she signed off; probably my one and only one! LOL) came across it and thought it was new. It's been around since August 2006. Take a look at my Visual Words Photo Blog. The link is also listed under "Captures" at the sidebar. Okay, back to normal programming....

I only found out about Big Apple Donuts from my sis-in-law when she told me that the store will be officially opening last Sunday. Last Monday itself, I made it a point to drop by to grab some donuts for my nephews who just came out from the hospital after a bout of dengue! (and for the rest of the family too), thought it will be a treat after about a week of hospital food! :o)

Can you see most of the glass trays are empty???

Situated at Western Courtyard, The Curve (behind TGIF), you can smell donuts in the air the moment you turn round the corner. Reaching there at about close to 4pm, there weren't many varieties left. They have an open concept kitchen where one can view how the donuts are made.

There is no proper line to queue and customers basically just walked up towards the donut display counter and start ordering. There were only a few customer at the time I was there, but I can imagine it to be quite chaotic and frustrating when there is a crowd.

Leaflets still weren't ready and no signages were up to let the customer know what sort of donuts Big Apple sells. With that, we just made do with pointing to whatever that was left on the glass donut trays. I'm not sure if the Buy a dozen, free 1/2 dozen applies for an unlimited time, but at RM17 for a total of 18 donuts, it's quite a good deal. However, 1/2 dozen free donuts are only of the glazed or semi glazed varieties. Plus, if one were to have a cup of coffee there, they throw in a semi glaze/glaze donut free too.

Uh...I found the words at the side of the box funny....I think they try too hard.
"indulge yourselves in the sweet charm and delight of big apple donuts. be seduced by our exquisite, alluring selections and sensual taste that can send you into uncontrolled desire.

experience that first time crush and savor the moment you bite into our luscious and tempting donuts. these crispy and fluffy creations will make you crave for more.

made from the finest ingredients, our exotic donuts are the result of big apple's devotion to making fresh and flavorful donuts. satisfy your donut lust at big apple and you will definitely say : amore!"

My selection (from bottom) : Cocoring (Belgian Chocolate), Semi Glazed, Green Teaser (Green Tea), Witnut (White Choc Topping with Peanut Butter filling), California Almond, Choreo (oreo cookie crumbs) and Glazed.
Image00032
I found the donuts light and fluffy; similar to Krispy Kremes. Dunkin Donuts' heavier but less oily than Big Apple though. Choreo, Cocoring, Semi Glazed and Glazed were pretty normal and nice. Mom's favourite was California Almond as she likes almond flakes and the white chocolate wasn't too sweet for her. The Green Teaser Green Tea could have passed off as normal as I couldn't really taste any Green Tea! The Witnut looks the prettiest of the lot but I was quite disappointed as the peanut butter filling was just a tiny dollop inside, let's hope they learn to be more generous. Taste wise, it was pretty good (the parts where you had peanut butter) but normal when I couldn't bite into any peanut butter filling!

Check out Masak-masak's review on Big Apple Donuts. She had twelve different varieties (not including the glazed and semi glazed) and have photos of each of them! Thanks for helping me remember the names of the donuts, Boo_licious. Also check out the reviews and photos from Eat First Think Later and Da Wheel Of Life & Happiness.

Yeah, this place is chaotic. I walked pass it last Friday when we ate at the Curve - even at 9.10pm, the kitchen was furiously churning out doughnuts and there was a small queue forming at the counter.

boo_licious : Aiyoh, either go during non peak hours or wait till the excitement wears off!

mama bok : Yeah, the plain old sugar donuts are classic! Really, can't find there?

Precious Pea : I eat the classic ones once in a blue moon and yes, it's nice. Get them from Damansara Kim at this old time bakery shop call "Bang Bang". Ha ha ....

meiyen : Yeah, they have to improve in that department.

babe_kl : Thanks for your concern. Fully recovered by now.

jackson : Mmm...better you come to SS2, fetch me go there and YOU buy, WE eat! He he...

lyrical lemongrass : Hope there will be more varieties waiting for you.

joe : Men! Don't want to ask for directions...LOL

Aah, my name is in your article! I thought the photo visual was new because the old one had a photo of clothes pin. :)

Indeed, I am your loyal fan. I come by at least once a day, sometimes twice or more.

Thanks to you, Teckiee, Lyrical Lemongrass, and many other Malaysian Floggers, I am able to show my audience what the real authentic food should look like.

I will attempt my version of Big Apple Donuts soon but I don't think it will look as good as the ones you and Teckiee post. :)

That description on box can qualify for a Mills & Boon's prologue.

My dotter and I have an understanding... she eats the rings, I eat the holes!! LOL And we both prefer the old-fashioned ones, liberally sprinkled with castor sugar, and getting our cheeks sugary in the process!

Dunno why, but I find Dunkin unpalatable. Like it's not fresh or something.

Actually I also liked those mini donuts that Jusco Midvalley used to sell. They use this conveyor belt to carry the donuts from raw form, into the hot oil and then if you prefer, they are are sprinkled with icing sugar but I usually take them plain because they are "hiong" enough. Pity, close shop already.

Nice photo. Took it from where? Federal Hill?

Dear WMW,

Sure, feel free to link me. I have realized that linking is a good way to generate traffic to one's blog.

Speaking of linking, I will need to link back to you and Teckiee for these delicious Big Apple Donuts. Donuts is on my "to make" list. :)

p/s I was just over at Kopi Soh's blog. I saw a familiar face and my heart...

wonda said...

Looks yummylicious! I used to make tofu donuts with pancake mix.

wmw said...

teckiee : They are pretty similar. Let them fight it out!

jackson : So "tang wah"! Hee hee...

catsndogs : To go with your movie?

kat : These taste better than DD's. There's an old bakery in Damansara Kim...Bang Bang (what a name). Still sells the classic and the mini doughnuts that you talked about. You're talking about the photo at the top of the main page...that's the view from KL Hilton. Click on the photo and you will be taken to the old post.

anonymous : You're not the only one! Is there a fan club out there?

lee ping : Ok, looking forward to seeing your home made donuts! Uhhh...what about the familiar face?

wonda : "Healthy" donuts? ha ha ha....an oxymoron! LOL

I think your mum really spot on, I luv American Almond too. I think buying this donut as a gift is much better than buying a slice cake. :)

catsndogs said...

hey.. drop by there this evening. bought 3 chocolote favour :P

the only things need to improve is the management. coz it took a long time before our drink arrived, moreover they gave us wrong drinks. then went back brought the right one.. and then back in brought the donut out.
cant there jsu served the drink together wit the donuts :)

honey star : Yeah, any plans to relocate? Seriously? Ha ha....

big boys oven : That's what I just did for a gathering!

kok : You are a loyal person! Ha ha ha...

Dear WMW,

:) This reminds me of how naive I was when I was younger, I followed a pretty boy home from school. He was my neighbor. Unfortunately, that day, he went to his grandmother's house. After I left the bus, I realized that I wasn't home. Thank God, a nice lady gave me extra money for me to take another bus home. So, enough of the familiar pretty face. If I think about that, I can't do anything else.

p/s Thanks a bunch for helping Aunty Lily. I think the link you gave her is great. I also asked her more question to better understand her problem. She is a sweet grandmother that has provided free recipes and knowledge to people (especially Malaysian and Singaporeans) all around the world. In fact, the donut recipe which I will use came from her.

where are the pictures???

wmw said...

Lee Ping : Hope Lily will get some answers! Waiting for your donut post!

Joe : Why so excited lah????

Wow, these were the first pictures of Big Apple I saw that didn't have long, snaking queues!

If you thought the copy on Big Apple's box was bad, have you read the side of J.Co's?
