Foh San Mooncakes and the Heong Far Biscuits on the right.
I like these! Heong Far Biscuits are good for those who likes the mooncake pastry (with melon seeds) without the filling. Therefore, less sweet as usual. I love to eat these with a hot cup of coffee on the side :o)
Since Motormouth was gonna go off soon, I told him that I needed him to take me to get some Heong Peah. Having only eaten Yee Hup's Heong Peah all this while, I was pleasantly surprised what came next. After being directed by him through small roads and some back lanes, he told us to stop right in front of a house. When we alighted, the whiff of smoky & freshly baked biscuits greeted us.
What's this? Another Mentos experiment being documented for YouTube? Nah, these are Heong Peah in the making - all taking place in the compound of the house itself!
Made the traditional way, the Heong Peah are coconut shell broiled (too bad we arrived while they were just starting on a new batch, hence, couldn't get a shot of the whole process). Stuck to the side of the clay stove (like naan!), they go through a meticulous process before they get packed, else there might be more crumbs than the actual biscuit! :o)
On the side, the Heong Peah is packed. Here the packets are left opened to let the biscuits cool. I was handed one after they tied it with a rubber band! :p
Motormouth also showed us where their retail outlet was:-
No 2, Selasar Rokam 11, Taman Ipoh Jaya, 31350 Ipoh, Perak.
Tel : 6012-563 0717.
Since we didn't pre-order, we were only allowed to get one pack (RM6.50/pack of 9). Just look at Seng Kee's Heong Peah, crisp & flaky pastry and the sweet gooey mix of maltose & shallot! This is another heavenly find! The family ate these so sparingly, with a pack lasting about a week for the 6 of us! Hahaha...the euphoria lasted a week, and then it was gone...sob! sob!
I hope their brisk business doesn't steer them into the same direction of others who have succumbed to modern technology to meet the growing demand. I'm praying that Seng Kee will still churn out their Heong Peah the traditional way for many many more years & generations to come.

pity they came up with the one packet per car rule, though it was indeed funny how we thought of bending the rule. =P
