Pu Yuan @ Jalan Klang Lama, Kuala Lumpur

(NON-HALAL)

Just before Jason moved away, we got round to doing dinner over one weekend (with Nivlac too!).  We had to go through the usual routine of choosing a place to eat and Jason suggested Pu Yuan.  So, off we went and with the help of a GPS and we found the place (the restaurant is located off the main road and is in a rather obscure lane).  Even when we arrived at the location, we still second guessed ourselves as we didn't spot Pu Yuan's "infamous" door.  Jason got down to take a walk around the area and confirmed that we had indeed arrived at the correct place.  So, what's this about Pu Yuan's "infamous" door?

Pu Yuan
Here it is...for those Chinese illiterate, would you know that restaurant lies behind this door?  Actually, a gambling den comes to mind, hehehe...But then, I'm sure a gambling den wouldn't have a Welcome sign (well, other than Genting's) Well, since we knew beforehand, we made our way through the door... still with slight apprehension, hahahah.....

Pu Yuan
Arriving relatively early (around 6.30pm...see that clock on the wall?), the place was still quite vacant.  Thankfully, as it's not all that big 'cos soon enough, all the tables were taken up...and what did we order?

Fried Sweet Potato Flour Noodles
Their famous fried sweet potato flour ... full of wok hei ! The sweet potato flour is kneaded into a dough, steamed for 3 hours and left overnight.  They then slice the dough and fry it with pork slices, cabbage, prawns, celery and crispy pork lard with dark sauce! Woo Hoo! Love the celery and crispy pork lard.
Note : If you don't fancy celery like Nivlac, you better ask them to hold it as they are rather generous with it.

Mini Wok Tofu
We wanted a tofu dish with gravy and the lady boss recommended the Mini Wok Tofu.  As much as I like the tofu, I just ate a bit of this as the gravy had a very strong ginger taste .  Since I don't like ginger, I watched Nivlac "drink" up the gravy.  Now, this was a dish he enjoyed!

Stir Fried Sweet Potato Leaves
And to add to our sweet potato flour noodles, we ordered stir fried sweet potato leaves.  Standard fare, but I did love the garlic bits!

Pork Ribs
This was ordered after we figured that we could still handle more food.  We also asked the lady boss and she recommended this particular pork ribs dish.  The name escapes me but what I can tell you was that this dish was great stuff. Caramelized pork ribs that were slightly sweet and salty!

The servings weren't that big but dinner was priced reasonably.  Furthermore, a place that has been in existence for 20 years says a lot.  Though the sight of the facade might act as a deterrent to some from entering Pu Yuan, be prepared for a pleasant surprise should you make it through that door.  Yes, we are definitely going back!

Read Motormouth's review of this place too...Hmmm, now that he's in Klang Valley, we should all go together!

Yeahlah ... kinda dodgy place. I did not succeed in locating this the first time. Ended up at the same fish head place a stone's throw away.

So when we going eh?
