Taman Connaught Pasar Malam - Part 2

Continuation ...

We passed by the "Smelly" or "Stinky" Tofu stall which was surrounded by lots of customers. I'm not a fan of this and I nearly fainted (slight exaggeration...) from the smell as I made my way through. It didn't help that I couldn't move away from the area quickly as the place was crowded, I resorted to holding my breath! Ha ha ha...Read more about the tofu from masak-masak.com here.

I had eaten this particular type of pork ball from the steamboat stall before (cooked by dipping into boiling water), it has minced pork inside with a bit of soup. So, it sort of "explodes" in your mouth when you bite into it. Hence, the name, Exploding Meat Ball (loosely translated!) However, over here in Taman Connaught, I had the chance to try another style of the meat ball, pan fried style. Yummy, especially with chilli sauce.
And here's a nasi lemak stall (friendly folks) with a difference.....
They serve AUSTRALIAN Lamb Rendang!!!! Plus a plain but delicious packet only cost RM1.
This is how they do the Bangkok's sweet dessert. It's like a mini crepe with some desiccated coconut and some light coconut cream. The batch in the pink pail didn't make it appealing though ;o)
The Vietnamese Popiah has desiccated coconut too. A strip of candy like substance (not sure what you call it) and molasses are added onto the popiah skin (thin pancake made from wheat flour) which is then rolled and eaten as it is.
We came across this ice-cream and it brought back childhood memories. I have not seen or eaten this ice-cream since my school days. The coconut cream part was not thick enough but I loved it nevertheless as it has been ages (plus beggars can't be choosers!). I wonder where else can I find it?

I still remember the lady who would carry two containers, going from floor to floor and door to door of my flats. There were few flavours available but I always ate the red bean variety. I can't actually recall what the other flavours were. Anyone care to refresh my memory? Eating this ice-cream made me feel like a kid again.

To be continued...

FYI : I'll be going for a minor eye operation later I was told in layman's term that they will be removing a sponge from my right eye. I had an operation end May this year due to retina detachment. The sponge was put into my eye to aid the healing of the retina. Thank goodness the retina is healed but the sponge has somewhat dislodged and now has to be taken out. If the retina was still not back in place, I would have had to undergo major eye surgery again! Well, it's okay, if some of you are wondering how come I can still blog all this while, I do touch typing and only look at the monitor to spell check and do links. Hope to be able to post soon...depending on doctor's advice. But anyway, I guess I'll just be doing even more touch typing for the next week or so. See you all soon...

Taman Connaught Pasar Malam - Part 1

I love going to Pasar Malam, usually the one at SS2 which opens every Monday. However, I got the opportunity to go to Taman Connaught's Pasar Malam (every Wednesday) which seems to be the biggest and the longest in Malaysia.

I took photos of stalls not found in SS2 (though by the time I put up this post, some are available in SS2). Given the size of the pasar malam, obviously there were a lot of variety. You have the standard stalls selling clothes and shoes, nick knacks etc. etc. So what was varied were the food stalls! So, the food journey starts!

We reached there about 7 plus pm and the crowd was just coming in. I was told that the non-food stalls open till 2 am here! Wow! The night market turns to morning market!

Came across the Fried Bread Crab (now available in SS2) and there was a long queue. We decided to give it a try. Verdict:You either like it or dislike it. To me, the paste in the bread was more chilli like with a teeny weensy bit of crab meat!
Then, I had the most refreshing juice from this particular stall. They use the Jack Lalane's Power Juicer and the fruits are thrown into the juicer whole. Thumbs up!East Meets West
Pit Stop for pickle junkies!
Local cakes delight!
Wonderful Crepes!
Cute moulds!End product? Cute cartoon character cakes!

Tempura King, 1Utama (Updated 11 Nov)

Talking about Japanese food, I thought of putting up this post on Tempura King, 1Utama, next to Sushi King at the old wing. This small restaurant gave us a few pleasant surprises when we ate dinner there one night. Its obscure location and being right next to the more famous Sushi King might be why there were only two other tables occupied. By the way, the bespectacled staff in the picture on the left is very hardworking and it was good service all the way. Let's hope he'll be able to keep up the good work should there be more customers to tend to.

As the name suggests, the specialty here are mainly tempuras with the usual side dishes. They have set meals promotion, consisting of a main meal, soft drink or green tea and a scoop of ice-cream (starting from RM11.90 onwards). Tempuras suit me fine as I don't have a penchant for raw stuff and was glad to know that they use carotino oil to fry the tempuras. Well, Mrs Pitt at this point, will be asking me to eat less fried stuff. But should it be fried, at least they're using carotino.

We ordered set meals and side orders of agedashi tofu and chawanmushi. As we tucked into the food, we concluded that they were quite good. After all, considering that this place offered fast food Japanese meals, they delivered (I have tried Shokudo's food at its Midvalley outlet and it was forgettable, sad to say).

After the meal, we had our ice-cream which was a nice way to end the dinner (I had my fave flavour - honey dew). So for a Japanese tempura fast food meal that's quick, good and most of all value for money, I'm going to Tempura King!

UPDATE:Went with family to Tempura King and took more pics. Thought I should just add them in here.
