Meng Kee & Lian Bee Hokkien Mee (Floggers' Meet) Part 2

After the first mini meal at Wong Ah Wah, the eight of us then adjourned further up Jalan Alor to Meng Kee for Grilled Fish. Of course, since floggers do not live by fish alone (especially me!), we also ordered Hor Chien (fried oysters with egg), grilled sotong (squid) and char kway teow (fried flat noodles)! LOL...
We sat at the tables by the roadside, hence the photos taken at this place has a different tinge of colour. Naturally, the photo taking session continued irregardless of poorer lighting conditions (floggers never give up!). We also had another round of drinks with some of us throwing caution to the wind, telling ourselves that we'll deal with our bladders only when the time comes. LOL...
The Hor Chien was slightly different...the egg was not broken up but was in large pieces. I prefer them smaller and covering the oysters.
The Char Kway Teow was okay (my fave is still from Asiacafe)
The grilled stingray - it was okay, let down by the the lack of belacan in the sambal that comes together with this dish as a dip; not pungent enough! For me, chilli plays a very important role. I love spicy food and all sorts of chillies.
Aaaahhh....this sotong dish was the best! The sambal that was used to cook this was thicker and had more belacan, therefore more pungent and potent! The onions and the aromatic curry leaves gave it an added oomph!

Well, the final stop of the hawker food tour was Lian Bee Hokkien Mee at Jalan Cheng Lock. It's located opposite EON bank and further down the same road as S&M Shopping Complex.
Check out the cook in action! Tables are located in the side lane of the building. Might not be the ideal place of dining for certain people who are not used to eating at such locations.

For me, eating at such places is a plus point to the food. Stalls like this especially in the Klang Valley are fast disappearing-this would be what I call Heritage Food! (I'm not talking about the Asian Heritage Row here...that's different style of dining altogether).
Presenting you The Menu! Since it's still Chinese New Year, they have added an air of festivity by hanging Chinese Red Laterns up along the zinc roof that provides shelter from the rain (or maybe some other form of UFOs - Unidentified Falling Objects).
The Hokkien Mee was okay. I felt that it was again better in the old days when I used to lived in KL. Dear ol' dad use to pack this home or we ate here now and then after watching movies in Rex Cinema (good memories). Mmm...what happened to the home made ice cream stall that I use to love (red bean flavour!), it was located at the corner coffee shop opposite Rex (which was turned into White Castle and then....eh, what is it now???)
I prefer the Hokkien Mee Hoon as it did not have the strong taste of the yellow noodles like the Hokkien Mee did (some of you would know what I mean). One can taste the "wok hei", the high flames add to the flavour.
The Pork Meat Soup was nice - sweet. Hopefully it wasn't MSG , I don't recall being thirsty after that though. On the other hand, we only had a small bowl of soup each.

After we were done, it was time to say our goodbyes to one another. The meeting didn't end there for some of us, we had another dinner event to attend the next day!

To be continued - Floggers's Meet at Makansutra

Nowadays I can only cook very simple dishes, sometimes all in one dish. You really know where to find good food that makes my mouth waters.

eh, yalar, that red bean ice cream was the best ever. fung keong right, the shop was called. wonder what happened to it.

REX...the last bastion of real cinemas. it withstood the onslaught of cineplexes for quite a long time, but what's happened now? finally gave in la i guess. a friend of mine said she had a rat gnawing on her toe once, there. so cute.

The chilli sotong was very good and the pork meat soup had no MSG - didn't feel my usual after effects on the way home.

its so sad that many of the old shops in chinatown area have been changed into something else. even Yook Woo Hin is undergoing renovation now.

I need to teach Meng Kee how to make proper sambal for the grilled fish.

For the Hokkien Mee, I agree with both hands and legs...it was hella better 10 years ago, same thing about Wong Ah Wah chicken wings.

babe kl : Yah lo...sad indeed. There should be a campaign done to preserve Heritage Food and Shops (while still serving up food the old way).

Lyn : Yup, if earthworms were fried this way, I bet they will be tasty too! LOL...

RM : Wah! A true food consultant! ;o)

allan & nigel : Thanks for dropping by mine too!

wmw,
You make my saliva dripping all over my laptop now!:( I miss all the foooood back in M'sia. I think the sotong looks the best. Alamakkkk...I'm craving for sotong now! haha!

And yea, I like the stingray with lots of sambal. One thing nice about stingray is, there's no bone like the other fish and the meat is quite tender for my liking. Too bad I couldn't find any stingray here. The seafood in Perth here is SUPER EXPENSIVE I tell you.

Precious Pea : Yah, the sotong is ho chiak. Next time go eat.

kok : ha ha ha....please cover your laptop with plastic before you come over to visit my blog.
