Sek Yuen Restaurant, Jalan Pudu

(Non-Halal)

When the dust has settled, another year gone...Ah Hah! Time for me to look through my photos and post pics from the "cold files". Hahaha....Long after it's been blogged by others, I take my own sweet time in putting this up, which is good in a way as it evokes pleasant memories of yet another floggers outing. Shall we go back in time...back to July 2007 when we went to Sek Yuen Restaurant, Jalan Pudu?
Sek Yuen Restaurant
The old & original Sek Yuen, still serving diners after all these years
Sek Yuen Restaurant
Coming back here was indeed taking a step back in time for me. I've not been to this place for the longest time and looked forward to dining here as part of a Pudu food crawl. We sat over at the air-conditioned outlet which is just next to the old one. We already knew what we needed to order and as the whole bunch of us sat down, the staff was surprised that we ordered only 3 dishes (as we had to save space for Round 2).
Braised Stuffed Duck

Braised Stuffed Duck
Braised Stuffed Duck - with ginkgo nuts, mushrooms and some other mushy stuff which I can't remember! The gravy was super yummy and this dish was cleared in no time and so was the gravy, all lapped up! Hahaha....
Kar Heong Vegetables
The Kar Heong vegetables was basically Chap Choy (mixed vegetables), a medley of mung bean noodles, dry lily bulbs, sweet bean curd slices, chives, shredded cabbage; fried with fu yue (fermented bean curd). This was one tasty dish as the fu yue gave it a very robust flavour.
Fish Paste Chicken Skin

Fish Paste Chicken Skin
The chicken skin with fish paste was nice though this dish couldn't really fill one's stomach. So I would say it's a wonderful (and pricey) snack instead. The skin was crispy and the fish paste was fresh which made this a good bite! Should go well with beer drinkers :o).

The bill for this meal came up to be slightly higher than expected and we suspected that the owner might have been a bit upset with the 12 of us taking up a big table and ordering only 3 dishes. Prices - the braised stuffed duck (RM70/USD21), the chicken skin stuffed with fish paste (RM60/USD18) and the vegetable (RM15/USD4.50) which seem to be the only reasonably price dish. Anyone else can confirm the prices of the duck and the chicken dish??? Anyway, I still enjoyed myself and I wouldn't mind coming back here again once in a blue moon even if it means having to pay a bit more for nostalgia. Well, Chinese New Year is coming soon and this could be just the place to set the mood...

People seem to get nostalgic about a lot of things they weren't so crazy about the first time around. ~ Author Unknown

How very nostalgic ... both the venue reviewed and the date? LOL. But yes, very appropriate, considering CNY is merely a month plus away.

Ah bring on the years of yore... I can hear the gramophone music already... So very "In the Mood for Love"...

I have not had lunch and am on a diet but now you make me so hungry and my salad does not look interesting anymore! :(

These dishes are hard to find elsewhere (nice oldish dishes) and new restaurants come up with new dishes. My mum makes the best 8 treasures duck. Pat poh ngap! :)
