Duck King @ Jaya One, Petaling Jaya

(Non-Halal)

If one were to drive along Jalan Damansara, you might notice a large overhead sign about Jaya One being The Food Place for PJ folks. Well, I have not been to all the restaurants in Jaya One and there are many indeed to choose from (and I can now have my Wendy's Shrimp Burger here too. Yay!).

With most of us being duck fans (the eating kind!) and the birthday girl being a big duck fan, it was decided rather easily to dine at Duck King - bracing ourselves for a weekend dinner!

Making dinner weekend reservations, we were told that there are two sessions to choose from; 6-8pm and 8pm-10pm. Yes, they are THAT packed - apparently since they first opened their doors in February this year.

So, try weekdays if you want a more blissful ambiance (meaning lower noise level) and more attentive service. You know what they say about noise and Chinese restaurants, and here's one originating from Indonesia.

Hang 'Em High
Here's a pic of the lovely roast meat and poultry, talk about shooting ducks! Hahaha...I know, lame but I can't help myself! The steam chicken at the bottom seems to be alive and doing some sort of a dance! Must be the Chicken Dance...ok, ok...I gotta stop myself, must be high on sugar!

Drunken Prawn
Well, one thing for sure I was probably a bit intoxicated from this Drunken Prawn dish (RM24/USD7) at that time (plus the red wine we had). The prawn was fresh and springy and the soup certainly put us in a merry mood :o)

Beancurd with Minced Chicken
I liked this Beancurd with Minced Chicken (RM16.80/USD4.80). I'm still pretty much a kid at heart, you know - how kids love gravy! We cleared everything on this plate with probably about a teaspoon of gravy left!

Roast Duck
The half Roast Duck (RM26.80/USD7.70) was lovely...with skin that "breaks" when we bit into it. Tender and none of the gamey taste at all.

Black Beans Clam
We also had the Black Bean Clams (RM14.80/USD4.20) which also came with bell peppers/capsicum. It was very flavourful indeed; bordering on the salty side though. Must be accompanied by steamed white rice for balance.

If one is in the mood for something different when it comes to rice, you can try the Lard Oil Rice aka Sinful Rice (RM2.00/USD0.60).

Drizzled with some light soy sauce and lard oil, this will send lard lovers not to the heavens but to the moon and back while the health conscious usually cringe in horror and disgust upon seeing this.

But of course, this is not to be consumed daily...the thought of that makes me cringe too even though I'm one of those who have been to the moon and back.....

"Fly me to the moon
and let me sing among the stars
Let me see what spring is like
on Jupiter and Mars..."

(eh...time to go for karaoke soon!)

Peking Duck
But of course we just had to order Peking Duck (though Duck King serves duck in nine variants) but found it just okay. Maybe the duck skin wasn't as crispy as the roast duck because of the added sweet sauce which could have soften it. I also found the quantity of skin in each roll inadequate, therefore lacking "oomph".

But the night ended on a good note when these buns were served. Having ordered the Peking Duck earlier and stripped it of it's skin, we opted for these buns with Black Pepper Duck Meat.

We loved these as it was very tasty but I felt that the duck meat was minced a tad much, it should be a bit chunkier so that we could actually feel the meat when we bite into one of these deep fried buns.

Singing songs like 'The Man I Love' or 'Porgy' is no more work than sitting down and eating Chinese roast duck, and I love roast duck - Billie Holiday

  13. cumi&ciki : I know what you mean. My fave roast duck is in Klang!

j2kfm : Well, better to call ahead and reserve. Dunno when things can get crazy, hahaha...

Nic : Sure thing, see you this Saturday hopefully.

Kok : Kok, this duck is good but there are a few places for duck in Klang Valley. Come to KL lah! Hehehe...What about my photos? I know not nice ler, cos I'm still figuring out the camera plus trying my best to take such close food shots with just my normal kit lens. Need to get a 50mm lens.

Precious P : Looks like we all should be brave and go for dinner here one weekend :p

beachlover : Wah, thank you for the compliment. Advertising co. should hire me then :o)

Jasmine : All the best :o). It can really get quite chaotic here.

  16. A feast, everyday : Look us up if you have to time. Would love to meet up with you.

KBCG : Hits and misses here lah...but dunno whether the crowd also affects the kitchen crew or not.

RM : Good for you then! Well, they insist on being the only advertisers on my page which I won't adhere to at the moment as I'm puzzled as I see other blogs having Foodbuzz and others. Why different rules.

mimid3vils : Yes, like my fave one in Klang! I-Po!

Simon : You free this Saturday? Come join us!

SC : So looks like the Peking Duck doesn't get good marks from most floggers.

NKOTB : Come we sing karaoke! Hahaha....

  17. Jaya One. An impressive place with some good joints. 2 weeks ago I was looking for Overseas Restaurant in Jaya One at AsiaJaya and Jaya 33! I like the duck dishes anytime. Good place.

  19. Thanks for the review WMW. I thought they only sell duck and nothing else. Surprisingly they offer other dishes as well. Will give it a try one day.

BTW, you mentioned a nice place in Klang that serves duck. May I please know whereabout is it? Thanks.

  24. I went there twice when I was back. Can't for the life of me remember what I ate other, than the duck!! Serves me right for not taking pictures, eh? But once I went with the kids and I was too busy looking after them, and another time with my dad which he would have thought I was strange for taking pixes!

It was nothing too exceptional. I only remember because I kept thinking 'I must have roast duck, I must have roast duck' when I came back and so happened this place is near and had plenty of parking (only inside the carpark, outside was atrocious!).

Sunrise,Loong Foong and Sei Ngan Chye does for me. Still haven't manage to try the Klang one!! My next trip ok? And pls make sure you do all your dental work way before the month of June.. :D

  26. Joe : The roast duck is not bad, it's the peking duck that a bit disappointing.

Kat : Hey there! How have you been? I'm under the weather right now. Kinda hibernating and recuperating. Having a bad cold and cough. Yes, will try not to schedule anything that might render me unfit when you come back next June! Hahaha...

Ilene : Best check it out with me! Wanna???

  27. WMW, it's always a pleasure dining with you. But when I'm free, you're not and when you are, I'm not. How lei? Anyway, no worries coz whenever I'm in Klang (cleaning up mum's place), I'll just take a trip to the shop and 'tau pau'.

  28. The half roast duck looks awesome!!!! :)

  29. Tried the roast duck & beancurd with my friend today and we were rather disappointed. The roast duck is just a very ordinary duck.

Out of luck I guess ...
