I was glad when I found out that Otak-Otak Place is in Tropicana City Mall, their 3rd outlet to-date (1st being in 1Utama and 2nd in Giant, Kota Damansara). However, this outlet in Tropicana City Mall has a whole different look from the other two (the 1Utama outlet has already undergone some interior changes and I think so will the other outlet). I have to say that this is my favourite outlet and I'm not saying that just because it's only 5 minutes away from where I stay :o). I like the look of this place and food has also improved on this third "outing" of theirs.
Great new look! I like the old fashion gate at the side ...
On the inside, a fusion of old meets new style cafe - lots of memorabilia on display. Note the display rack that's on the ceiling. Yes, that's a real bicycle on top!- apart from the one displayed at the front of the place. Uhhh...I wonder if anyone really uses that metal cup to gargle since it's at the side of the sink....Hahaha....
Items for sale ... rekindling our childhood days!
I've been to Otak-Otak Place on many occasions and even met up with Jason and Motormouth (the two Ipoh guys, though Jason is now living in the next building to Tropicana City Mall) here. Click HERE to read Motormouth's post on his visit to Otak-Otak Place. We only had some snacks that night but here are some pics of other food that I've tried at this outlet .
Apart from the usual coffee and tea (which is quite good and comes served with a Hup Seng biscuit!), my favourite drink would be this Blackcurrant Longan (RM3.50). They also have ice blended drinks and the more unique ones would be the Tongkat Ali Ginseng Blended, Mocha Ginseng Blended and Haw Blended (blended drinks at RM5.90).
Look at that cute paper table mat that has this section that pops up ... one of the many cute things one can find in Otak-Otak Place. Even the menu is in the form of an exercise book (note the menu in the background)!

Ohhhh....of course what would I usually order from Otak-Otak Place? Otak-Otak, of course! This one here is my absolute favourite. At RM0.60/stick - (normally at RM1.10/stick, this is a promo that they are running here till end June) these grilled Otak-Otak Sticks are fantastic. It's comes hot off the grill and they are spicy! I love these Otak-Otak Sticks to bits!
One of the less spicy Otak-Otak version (Otak-Otak Place lives up to its name - the last time I did a count, there are actually 16 different varieties!), the Steamed Otak-Otak is yummy too. Take your pick from either Fish (RM3), Squid or Prawn (RM3.90).
I love most of the Otak-Otak variety here as I find that the mix of the fish paste together with the rest of spices (like shallots, chilli, turmeric amongst others) blend very well together with none overpowering the other.
Another fave Otak-Otak order of mine would be the Nasi Lemak Otak-Otak (RM7.90)! ...
It's served in a cute two-tiered tiffin carrier (which you can buy for RM15). Top tier contains a pan-fried Otak-Otak together with some sambal and peanuts and the bottom tier contains the nasi lemak together with some slices of cucumber and half of a hard boiled egg. I like the rice here, not too overly "lemak" but just nice. However, I find the sambal average.
And just when you think, what other Otak-Otak dish can there be... try this!
Otak-Otak Burger (RM8.90) - This was a first time order for me. A little bit weird at first but I started to enjoy it more when it came to my third bite. I found this good value for money as the side dish of potato wedges itself were of almost impeccable quality (one can order Potato Wedges on its own - RM4.50)
Then there is the Hainanese Chicken Rice (RM8.90). See how I was served my favourite part of the chicken? Hehehe...chicken breast meat!
The meat was nice and firm where as the rice was alright, not as authentic as I would like it to be. However, this dish comes with three sauces; ginger, chilli and black, plus points for making it complete!
A crowd favourite - Nasi Briyani Dam (RM12.90). I forgot to take a pic of the piece of chicken that was "unearthed" later as it came hidden beneath the rice. The rice was a bit dry but eating it with some dhal curry soon rectified it. The rice was flavourable and but the star of this dish is the "hidden" chicken. The chicken is so well marinated that it's absolutely bursting with flavours. I also like the cute way that it's served on a wooden chopping block!
The Mee Bandung Muar (RM7.90) is also favourite of many. Its gravy like soup has the right consistency. Looks like the kitchen is getting things done well and has improved :o)
Little Green Soldiers - I thought they had ceased to exist till I saw them here in Otak-Otak Place. I like coming to Otak-Otak Place as I'm transported back to my childhood days; the novelty of the food being served in tiffin carriers/claypots, the memorabilia that adorn the walls/cabinets ... in almost every nook and cranny. The food and the place here spell FUN!
