Assam House Restaurant @ Medan Gopeng, Ipoh

(HALAL)

Continuing from my previous post on Ipoh food, I had the opportunity to try out the food at Assam House on another one of my day trips there. The four of us had gone to an office nearby in the area and the folks at the office told us good things about Assam House which was within walking distance.

We had heard about Assam House but didn't know that they had a branch in Medan Gopeng. From a little setup back in 1991, it is well known for serving up delicious food and has attracted many famous and celebrity patrons through the years. The restaurant facade itself was colourful and stepping into the bright, clean and spacious setup brought us relief from the scorching sun. The menu had an ample line up and we quickly narrowed down to four dishes as we were really hungry (it was slightly past 2 p.m).

Assam House

Curry Assam Fish Head
Of course, we had to order the famous Curry Assam Fish Head, RM18.90 (I tried everything of this dish except the fish itself, hahaha...). I must say that I loved the curry assam gravy, done Indian style. It had the right consistency and we were delighted with this fragrant and delicious dish.

Mixed Belacan Vegetables
With the four of us being spicy food lovers, we unanimously agreed on ordering the Mixed Belacan Vegetables (RM8.90) - brinjal, petai (stinky beans), long beans and sweet beans stir fried with belacan and onions. The taste was impeccable and it was spicy enough for us to give it thumbs up.

Beancurd
We needed to balance the spicy dishes to give our palate a change and we ordered the Golden Beancurd with Mushrooms and Vegetables (RM7.90). Once again, we enjoyed this dish as the beancurd was aromatic, soft and smooth. Together with the rest of the ingredients and the light gravy, it was a welcome change.

Butter Mantis Prawn
Our final dish, Butter Mantis Prawn (RM13.90). We found the mantis prawn small in size. There simply wasn't enough oomph biting into them as there weren't much meat. However, our criteria was still met in terms of taste. It wasn't oily and didn't taste oily; obviously the chef has good temperature control over the wok.

Assam House serves a range of Asian cuisine at reasonable prices and pride themselves on this fact. Based on this visit of ours, they can stake such a claim as we thoroughly enjoyed our lunch.
