Ipoh Food Frenzy In 4.5 Hours, JJ Cakes - Part 2

After having the earlier much needed meal (we were famish at that time!) at Dai Shu Geok aka Big Tree Foot, we went off in search of JJ Cakes, in particular the swiss rolls that Motormouth had blogged about. With Motormouth directing us, we found out it was nearby Pasir Pinji. Reaching the place, the "shop" was actually a counter with a chiller located at the back corner of De' Mouth, a Chinese restaurant.

Though I had read about the many varieties available, I was still pretty much stumped when I was faced with the decision of picking out what I wanted. Just how many are there to choose from (just the swiss rolls alone)? Let me run it by you ...

(RM15/roll)
Carrot Cream Cheese
Banana Cream Cheese
Pumpkin Cream Cheese
Spinach Cream Cheese
Green Tea Cream Cheese
Chestnut Puree

(RM12/roll)
Chocolate Hazelnut
Coffee Walnut
Fresh Chempedak
Fresh Durian
Fresh Strawberry
Fresh Mango
Fresh Yam
Fresh Sweet Potato
Juicy Corn
Chocolate Mint
Dragon Fruit
Wolfberry
Black Sesame
Green Bean
Prune

(RM10/roll)
Pandan Custard
Blueberry Filling

(RM8/roll)
Butter Cream (Pandan/Vanilla)

You see what I mean? Decisions, decisions, decisions! Luckily bro was with me and together we picked out 5. And when one buys 5, you get one FREE! Yay!

Between the two of us, we got the Chocolate Hazelnut, Coffee Walnut, Fresh Chempedak, Carrot Cream Cheese and Fresh Durian and the 4 sliced cream cheese variety pack consisting of Carrot, Green Tea, Spinach and Pumpkin.

Using fresh fruits/vegetables with no preservatives, we were advised to finish them up within 3 days. Low in sugar too, these swiss rolls are great as they are not as sweet as the normal offering. Being one that can never have too much of butter, I was a bit skeptical as to how these swiss rolls would taste like as Soya Lite Oil is used instead but the plus point was that it gave it a very light and fluffy texture.

The filling of each roll were adequate (especially generous when it came to the Cream Cheese variety) and my favourite would be the Chocolate Hazelnut, followed by Fresh Chempedak. I do love the different nuts that were in the swiss rolls; cashew in the Carrot Cream Cheese, pistachios in the Spinach Cream Cheese, walnuts in the Coffee swiss roll and even the pumpkin seeds in the pumpkin cream cheese and sunflower seeds in the Green Tea cream cheese roll.

Overall, I do love the texture and the filling of the swiss rolls but the cake itself was very light in flavour, given the fact that everything is natural. So, the taste and flavour pretty much comes from the filling itself. It's a welcome change from the range of the usual swiss rolls that we usually come across in Klang Valley. This only means that I will still go back to JJ Cakes whenever I happen to be in Ipoh.

There was also a write up on JJ Cakes in THIS Star article too.
