Kedai Kopi Tian Hong, Salak South

(NON-HALAL)

Recalling an old post of mine on Kum Kee Chicken Rice (but it's the roast pork that's great!), this is kinda like Part 2 of that post as PL finally made good on her promise and took us again to Tian Hong in Salak South (it was closed earlier) for her favourite Char Siew (BBQ Pork). We turned up at Tian Hong just about noon and managed to get one of the last two tables; sitting along the corridor.

Tian Hong
Kedai Kopi Tian Hong is one of those old coffeeshops that's situated below some walk up flats; reminding me of something similar to those around Jalan Alor.

All in a row
Despite all that activity, things still look quite orderly (pic taken after lunch)

We ordered two versions of Char Siew....

THE LEAN

BBQ Pork
I tried a bit of the lean char siew and though it tasted good; on the sticky sweet side (well caramelized), the meat was too lean for me as I found it a tad hard.

and my order....THE NOT SO LEAN :p

BBQ Pork 2
I definitely prefer this version as it was better in texture and easier to chew on. It's got a different bite to it. How do I put it? If char siew cuts were given a gender, Tian Hong's char siew would be a MALE. It's a "rugged" char siew! Hahaha....This ranks third on my list of fave char siew.

BBQ Pork
1st place is a tie between Famous Seremban Favourites (Left) and Spring Golden (Right); different in their own way and the best on my list.

Roast Pork
We also ordered a small portion of Roast Pork to try. It was nice; tender and moist. However, Tian Hong's char siew is the better choice.

The master
And a rare sight...the father whom apparently has relinquished his duties and resigned himself to doing "background work", leaving the orders and front counter to his wife and sons. I am amused that the father is so colour co-ordinated, wearing matching blue gloves with his blue polo T-shirt. Even one of his sons was telling me, "Quick, go take a pic of him!". Maybe it's 'cos he is seldom seen out at the front of the shop or he was amused too to see his dad that colour co-ordinated! ;o)

Nothing like the good old fashion char siew and siew yoke in a working class's coffee shop.

wmw, there's this corner restaurant in paramount garden, i think it's called eric's delights. it sells sticky, melt-in-your-mouth charsiu too. at the traffic lights at KFC paramount (KFC being on your right), turn left. go down that road all the way straight, you will see 2 corner kopitiams on your left, facing each other. eric's delights is the one serving charsiu, and it sells out pretty early too. so go before 2pm.

Jessica said...

sorry, it's simon's delights, not eric's delights. *rolls eyes*.

The first two char siu pics showed so much glaze, or was it "touched up"? They all look great to me and I wish I could find the recipe for them! I am definitely missing an ingredient or two to make that perfect char siu!

ling239 said...

i guess only the not so lean ones will give u the melt in the mouth feel ? ^_^

wmw said...

BBO : Yup, give it a try!

tummythoz : Guess it's because it's the best in that area?

Jason : Yah, FSF...going again soon. Nolah, the son's not amusing. I say the son is amused. Aiyoh...

ggmu : So, you're one of the fans. Try FSF and Spring Golden yet?

j2kfm : Got lah, some lean ones at certain places are rather tough to chew. I had that encounter at Meng Kee.

Jessica : Thanks for the tip, will go look for that place.

Hazza : Photos not touched up except for brightness. The day you perfect your recipe please remember to make some for me when you next come back here! Hahaha....

ling239 : From my char siew experience, yes! :o)

yeah, i think 1/2 lean 1/2 fat is the way to go! and famous seremban favourites let us choose!

yupe, agree that FSF is one of the good ones around!

how did u manage to take such pretty photos in the light!?! Amazing.

Cynthia said...

I want the not so lean (lol)

Yum, that all looks so good. Sometimes you just need to eat the non-lean version because it has the best flavour and taste - that's just accepted in the world of food! :D

hmm, think you've forgotten about me already. :D

When my friends and I discovered this several years back, we'd have regular cravings for this char siu and take extended lunch hours to drive all the way to Salak South for this stuff. hehe.

LOL!!! Male char siu!!! Sure looks good but I am clueless where is salak south. Can tar bau some male, i mean the char siu for me next time ar? I love male too!

wmw said...

Nic : I think most places would let us have that option but whether they get the 1/2 lean 1/2 fat ratio right is another thing.

Daphne : I was sitting outside the shop and using natural sunlight which is always best for photography. Thanks for the compliment :o)

Cynthia : I think most of us do but I have some health conscious friends who would request for a lean cut! *Gasps*

Katie : Agreed! Hear! Hear! Hahaha...

NKOTB : Huh? Why? Cos I didn't courier char siew to you? LOL!

Lyrical L : So, you know what I mean when I said it's a Male char siew, right? :o)

Precious P : Dunno when I'll be going there again. I'm also clueless without a guide! :p

Jun said...

the lean one looks a bit dry, is it?

choi yen said...

"bun fei sau" (half lean half fat) char siu is the best!!!

wmw said...

Jun : In a way, it was rather well caramelized...texture was definitely more chewy. Hence, rugged Male char siew! Hahaha...

mimid3vils : Yup, I like it that way too! :o)
